It’s kind of sad when the first entry to your own blog was actually done by a mate passing on a comment about the blog, and not an official entry. Oh well, here’s the first… of many.
The title of my site ‘From Selfless to selfish – Africa and Europe’ is what I intend my trip to encompass. Oh yea, I have not been in an official job (or educational institute) for a good deal of time so anticipate errors and not much in the area of being sophisticated.
The start of this new adventure will include the more selfless act of volunteering. Africa, in my opinion, will need either an entire year of exploration or several visits, but for now will include a Francophone country, Burkina Faso (Ouagadougou).
For 27 days the claim has been I will be participating in reforestation, building with natural materials, shea butter harvesting and teaching English programs; the Burkinese organisation for this being Reciproka. I found Reciproka’s program through the website: www.craigslist.com, an online classified/ trading post. A good thing about this program, already, is that I have had a few meetings with some of the Geelong libraries and I was able to get a full sports bag worth of picture books for them to be able to have further incentives to learn more English upon my departure.
I have heard a broad range of comments on this little adventure with both comments of ridicule and comments of amazement being the two main views. I feel, with little committment in life right now, this to be a means to experience another culture from a totally different perspective. To get more of a view of Reciproka, the website www.reciproka.org has plenty of info, as well as links, detailing about itself and Burkina.
So, ’selfless’ is referring to helping people out for several weeks. This is an initiative I will combat further when I am able to settle down (plans are being written down).
‘Selfish’ is referring to my time in Europe. I planned the Europe leg slightly on a whim, but also after contacting people that I know through out Europe, in particular the Western part of Europe and Scandinavia. The itinerary will (eventually) be uploaded, but with my inabilities to function this site, and inability to be bothered, there will be less aesthetically pleasing views to be had. Yea, I am comparing my abilities to the blog of Tom’s. This can be checked out on the sidebar.
My entries tend to be long, more for my sake, but hopefully readers can understand Aussie English.
WARNING: Entries will be sporadic and at times pointless
